MP Franjieh Calls Hizbullah to Sign No Hegemony Charter
MP Samir Franjieh on Tuesday challenged Hizbullah to accept signing a charter "rejecting foreign hegemony, including Iranian and U.S. hegemony."
Franjieh said the basic challenge is for parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah to "adopt a decision … ending their role as a line of defense for Syria and Iran."
Franjieh, a prominent member of the March 14 majority alliance, said a call made by Berri to resume dialogue after the forthcoming Arab Summit aims at "buying time … the essence of the political dispute with the opposition is their effort to maintain Lebanon an arena for regional battles."
"Most important is the election of a president," he added.
He predicted that the forthcoming summit, scheduled for March 29 in the Syrian capital of Damascus, "wouldn't have any tangible effect on Arab causes or the Lebanese crisis."
The Arab initiative, according to Franjieh, is "losing momentum."
He reiterated commitment by the majority to nominating Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman as "consensus candidate for president."
He concluded by noting that "the situation in the region is very serious."
