Security Council Receives 7th Report on 1559 Monday
U.N.
chief Ban Ki-moon on Monday will hand over to South Africa's Ambassador
Dumisani Kumalo, this month's Security Council chairman, the seventh
report on the implementation of Resolution 1559, An Nahar daily said.
It
said the Council will discuss the report written by U.N. Special Envoy
Terje Roed-Larsen, who oversees the implementation of the resolution,
on May 8.
Security
Council Resolution 1559 calls on foreign troops to leave Lebanon, all
Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias to disarm, the extension of the
government's authority throughout the country and respect of the
country's sovereignty and independence.
In his last report issued October 24, 2007, Ban warned Lebanese factions against rearming and conducting military training.
Calling
on all parties, including Hizbullah, to commit to the disarmament of
all militias in Lebanon, he restated his conviction "that the eventual
disarmament of Hizbullah in the sense of the completion of its
transformation into a solely political party" is of critical importance
for the future of a fully sovereign Lebanon.
He
noted that since the resolution was adopted in 2004 "Lebanon has
continued to suffer setbacks in its struggle to reassert, beyond
dispute, its sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and political
independence."
