NLP: We hope the Arabs will stand behind Lebanon
The Lebanese National Liberal Party said that the government decision to boycott the Arab Summit in Damascus is aimed at holding Syria and its Iranian ally responsible for blocking the Arab initiative and for preventing Lebanon from being represented at the summit by a president, who is the only Christian head of state in the Arab world.
In a statement, the party questioned the reasons preventing Syria from cooperating with international resolutions, Arab efforts and the national dialogue roundtable’s recommendations.
“Why can’t Syria benefit from the summit and act reasonably in spite of Lebanon’s absence?” the statement read.
“Let Syria recognize the Lebanese state, establish diplomatic relations with it and draw its borders with it from North to South Lebanon,” it added.
The party also expressed its appreciation to Saudi Arabia and Egypt for sending low-level delegates to the summit instead of their king and president, respectively, in protest of Syria’s interference in Lebanese affairs.
“We expect for Arab issues to suffer during the coming year under Syria’s presidency of the Arab League,” the party’s statement added.
