Lebanon issues 721 checks for 2006 war victims
On Mar 27 the government's Central Fund for Displaced announced the issuance of funds for those affected during the Hezbollah Israeli war of July 2006.
The Fund stated that 721 checks were issued on March 26. These funds are in addition to those announced on March 19, 2008 and earlier dates, to those victimized by the war in the areas of the southern suburb and the provinces of Mount Lebanon, northern Lebanon and the Bekaa region. The funds are to cover construction and renovation costs of their residences.
The Government asked the concerned citizens to bring their Lebanese ID s in order to collect their checks.
The government did not declare the value of the checks, but the cost of reconstruction will be in the billions of dollars.
The 2006 war resulted in the displacement of over one million Lebanese. Over 120,000 residential properties were destroyed and the Lebanese infrastructure was left in ruins.
Over 1200 Lebanese were killed mostly civilians and over 5000 were wounded.
