Lebanese Army units and U.N. peacekeepers on Wednesday carried out war games in south Lebanon in an effort to "bolster cooperation and coordination" between the two forces.

The state-run National News Agency (NNA) said Lebanese and U.N. artillery batteries took part in the maneuver carried out in the Naqoura coastal sector at Lebanon's southern borders with Israel.

Lebanese and French U.N. gunners operating 155-mm howitzers fired at a target 14 miles of the coastline, the report said.

The report said nearly 100 howitzer shells were fired during the maneuver that lasted four hours.

Commanders expressed satisfaction with the ongoing coordination between the Lebanese army and the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the report added without further elaboration.

Both forces man a zone of Lebanese terrain south of the Litani River since Aug. 14, 2006 when UNSCR 1701 ended 34 days of confrontations between Hizbullah and Israel.
